Building the ports of tomorrow: Highlights from the 5th Valenciaport Hackathon

the 5th Valenciaport Hackathon

The energy of innovation was felt at the Port of Valencia as 45 participants, divided into 9 multidisciplinary teams, gathered to tackle strategic challenges proposed by key port stakeholders. The 5th edition of the Valenciaport Hackathon, organized by Opentop, once again confirmed its role as a driving force for open innovation in the maritime-logistics ecosystem.

Over three intense days, participants worked on three real-world challenges:

  • Cybersecurity compliance with the European NIS2 directive (proposed by ATEIA, represented by Raminatrans)
  • MARPOL waste traceability and emissions reduction (proposed by the Valencia Port Authority)
  • Energy efficiency of reefer containers in port terminals (proposed by Logistop)

On Friday afternoon, participating companies and collaborating entities were introduced, the challenges were presented, and the teams were formed. Saturday began with a visit to the Port of Valencia, led by Juan Manuel Díez, Head of Innovation at the Valencia Port Authority. Afterwards, participants toured the APM Terminals facilities, with a presentation by Joan Carbó, Equipment Project Engineer at APMT. Back at the Edificio del Reloj, teams continued working intensively on their solutions.

Sunday, May 11, was the big day: the final presentations were delivered to the jury of the 5th Valenciaport Hackathon, composed of José Andrés Giménez (Fundación Valenciaport), Yolanda Trujillo (IDF Association), Ángela Castelló (Startup Valencia), and Francisco Macián (Valencia Port Authority)

After a difficult deliberation, the jury selected the three winning projects:

the 5th Valenciaport Hackathon

1st Prize (€3,000), sponsored by the Juan Arizo Serrulla Foundation:
A low-cost IoT solution for real-time monitoring of energy consumption in reefer containers. The system uses thermodynamic principles and big data analysis to optimize energy use, detect anomalies, and visualize operational status through a smart dashboard.

2nd Prize (€2,000), awarded by The Whiteam Technology Services (twt-ts):
A SaaS platform to strengthen cybersecurity culture within port environments. It includes interactive training, threat detection, progress tracking, and NIS2 compliance, providing real-time action management and scalable access control focused on people as the first line of defense.

🥉 3rd Prize (€1,000), provided by Propeller Valencia, the association of logistics executives:
An IoT solution for real-time monitoring of temperature, humidity, and energy use in reefer containers. The system eliminates manual checks and builds a predictive consumption model based on container position, weather conditions, and logistics constraints—enhancing energy efficiency and operational planning.
