♻️ MARPORTS: Intrapreneurship and innovation for more sustainable port waste management

02/06/2025. Innovating from within is more essential than ever. MARPORTS is an example of this approach. This project, conceived by Francisco Macián, Head of Port and Commercial Services at the Port Authority of Valencia, received the highest score in the intrapreneurship category of the recent Ports 4.0 Ideas call by Puertos del Estado.

A smart solution for a global challenge

MARPORTS offers a tech-driven solution to optimize the collection, traceability, and valorization of MARPOL waste generated by vessels. By leveraging artificial intelligence, geolocation, predictive analytics, and an ERP traceability dashboard, the platform enables route planning, intermediate waste segregation, and maximized recycling — all aligned with circular economy principles.

The goal: to make MARPOL waste management more efficient and sustainable.

Intrapreneurship rooted in experience

What’s most inspiring about MARPORTS is its origin. The idea was born during the COVID-19 lockdown, emerging from operational insights and a strong professional drive for improvement. It was developed from deep internal knowledge of port processes.

Opentop & Valenciaport Hackathon

Opentop, the Open innovation Hub promoted by Fundación Valenciaport, helped MARPORTS’ development, as the project directly addresses one of the challenges presented during the latest ValenciaportHackathon, organized by Opentop. There, Francisco Macián was able to share his vision, collaborate with participants, and explore different approaches to the problem.

To sum up, MARPORTS is not only a cutting-edge technological proposal, but also a symbol of the potential of internal talent in our ports. Initiatives like this one prove that with the right support, intrapreneurship can drive real transformation, moving us toward a cleaner, smarter, and more socially responsible logistics model.
