Hydros Power, facing Opentop’s challenge to develop solutions for port energy transition and decarbonization.

14/10/2024. Hydros Power was the company to solve Opentop’s challenge to develop solutions for port energy transition and decarbonization. 

This challenge has been faced within the framework of the Business Growth Program.

To this end, the company created STELION, a decentralised solution composed of STELION Powertrains, hydrogen propulsion modules that will easily replace current batteries in many applications. Its STELION Capsules solution, on the other hand, will enable rapid refuelling of its powertrains and, finally, its STELION Station solution will be responsible for generating the hydrogen at the place of consumption.

We interviewed the co-founder and CMO of Hydros Power, Guillermo Megías Collado, to learn more about the company and its experience in the Opentop program.

– How would you define your company?

At Hydros Power we accelerate the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy model, where hydrogen is at the core of the company. We founded the company with the clear conviction that this energy vector is key to solving the great challenges of decarbonization that lie ahead. And we see it not only as an option for the future, but as a reality that we need to implement today.

Our approach focuses on offering a complete solution adapted to the needs of the market, covering everything from production and storage to distribution and use of hydrogen. With our STELION ecosystem, we not only make it easier for companies to adopt hydrogen, but also do so in an efficient and scalable way to improve the productivity of their processes in aerial, logistics, remote and urban mobility applications, among many others. We want to lead this change. It is not only about offering our technology, but also about bringing a vision, values and philosophy that has forged Hydros Power. We want to be part of the change and we believe that STELION is the missing piece of the puzzle.

– The challenge launched by Opentop aims to develop solutions for port energy transition and decarbonization. How does Hydros Power face this challenge? Is it a scalable need to other ports?

Ports present very special conditions when it comes to implementing new processes, especially when it comes to energy. 

However, despite their scale and extension, the modularity and scalability with which we provide STELION allows us to adapt to different operating volumes and energy needs to drastically reduce emissions.

These characteristics that define our ecosystem allow us to offer a solution that is not limited to a particular port. With STELION, we can integrate hydrogen into existing infrastructures, adapting it to the conditions of the environment regardless of the size of the port. If we look at European Union environmental policies such as the Fit for 55 strategy, which recognizes ports as key environments for decarbonization, our solution is positioned as a scalable option to achieve the objectives set.

– How do you rate your time with Opentop so far? What services and experiences have you gained the most from it?

Our time at Opentop has been really valuable. Throughout our time at Hydros Power, we have had the opportunity to participate in numerous innovation programs, but none like this one. We have been surprised by the quality of the services offered, especially the access to valuable mentors, whose experience and knowledge has helped us to identify opportunities and optimize the approach in a sector as complex as ours.

Another aspect that we value positively is the visibility that the program has given us. Opentop has opened the doors to events where we have had the opportunity to present our project to important stakeholders in the ecosystem, from investors to potential strategic partners.

Would we recommend startups to come here? Without a doubt.

– What would you say to a startup that is thinking of joining the Opentop ecosystem?

Our advice is clear: don’t hesitate. For us, it has been an experience that has allowed us to move faster and with greater focus, while allowing us to connect with an ecosystem full of opportunities.
